Home Economics
Welcome to the Home Economics Department.
In Rutherglen High, the Home Economics department consists of Mrs McGowan and Mrs Martin. We utilise the Curriculum for Excellence and SQA guidelines for a Broad General Education.
Home Economics is a valuable and important subject which gives young people a variety of essential life skills which will be useful for a whole range of employment and life opportunities. We work with many departments on cross curricular projects and help raise funds for a variety of projects.
Curriculum Information
S4 to S6 is the Senior Phase with a focus on National Qualifications such as Food Preparation and Food Health and Wellbeing.
S1 - With Home Economics Broad General Education (BGE), the pupils cover a range of topics which gives an introduction into the importance of food, health, and hygiene in everyday life. Pupils learn predominantly through practical hands on Cooking and Collaborative Teamwork.
S2- the BGE continues. In practical cookery there is an emphasis on Safety and Hygiene in the kitchen. The relationship between food and health is studied and factors that affect food choice.
S3- With a mainly practical approach, there is a focus on food storage and up to date dietary advice. This gives pupils the knowledge to create delicious products which will meet enhance lifestyle choices.
Pupils learn through a range of effective Learning and Teaching Strategies which include:

· Self Evaluation of Practical skills
· Peer Assessment of Practical Skills
· Power points
· Design Briefs
· A variety of collaborative approaches are used by pupils to understand and complete coursework.
Assessment from S1 –S3
This takes the form of:-
· Practical skills observational checklists
· Peer and Self-Assessment
· End of unit tests
· Cooperative tasks allow for formative assessment by the teacher.
BGE in Home Economics leads on to:-

ICT
Welcome to the ICT Department.
The ICT department aims to equip our learners with the necessary ICT skills to help them to effectively navigate everyday life during their time at school and beyond.
We provide a relevant, challenging, stimulating and enjoyable curriculum.
Our pupils have access to a large, well equipped ICT suite equipped with powerful networked computers.
We also have a range of ICT equipment throughout the school including Chromebooks, iPads, multimedia projectors, printers, scanners, webcams, C-Touch screens and smart boards.
Our pupils will identify hardware and media used in computer systems, startup/shut down the computer correctly, create documents with text and graphics, print documents, save and retrieve work, use menus and appreciate the importance of ‘username’ and ‘password’.
The pupils will appreciate the importance of Health and Safety around the ICT suite and the rules of hygiene around the computers. Pupils will compare methods of communication and appropriate safe use of the internet, email and social media. Pupils will be introduced to programming by using a robot and developing directional instructions.

Technical
Welcome to the Technical Department.
S1 to S3 is Broad General Education based on Curriculum for Excellence experiences and outcomes. Pupils are taught how to safely use a variety of workshop tools and materials to make various craft items. Coursework is differentiated to the needs of pupils.
Pupils are assessed in a variety of ways including Teacher questioning, observations, written assessments, and self-evaluation.
We aim to make learning enjoyable and achievable for all. Pupils will develop a broad range of useful design and technology skills and desirable personal qualities.
S4 to S6 is the Senior Phase with a focus on National Qualifications in Practical Craft Skills and Practical Woodworking.
At all levels, pupils are encouraged to work as independently as possible, developing skills for work and awareness of environmental issues.
